  • connect with other members of the community.

You agree to use the Hub:

  • lawfully, honestly and respectfully;

  • without interfering with the operation or security of the Hub; and
  • without infringing any third party’s rights.

The Hub is currently provided free of charge. Some activities promoted through it may involve a fee, which will be stated separately.

4. Accounts and membership

Some parts of the Hub may require approved membership or an account.

When applying or registering, you agree to:

  • provide information that is accurate and reasonably complete;
  • use your own identity or have proper authority to act for an organisation;
  • keep your account information reasonably up to date;
  • keep your login details secure;
  • avoid sharing your password or account with another person; and
  • contact us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without permission.

You are responsible for activity carried out through your account unless it resulted from something for which we are responsible.

Membership is intended for people and organisations whose work or interests are reasonably connected with the purpose of Hong Kong Arts Net UK. Our Membership Eligibility Guidelines explain the types of Hong Kong connection, practice and professional involvement that we normally consider relevant. The Guidelines are illustrative rather than exhaustive and do not create an automatic right to membership.

We may:

  • ask for further information before approving an application;
  • approve or decline an application, taking into account the Membership Eligibility Guidelines, the information provided and the purpose of the Hub;
  • place reasonable limits on account functions;
  • contact you to confirm or update information; or
  • suspend or close an inactive, misleading or misused account.

Where reasonably possible, we will explain a membership decision or account action. However, we may need to limit the information provided where it concerns another person’s privacy, safeguarding, security or confidential information.

Membership and independent account registration are intended to be limited to people aged 18 or over. Young people may participate in specific activities where appropriate, subject to suitable safeguarding arrangements and any separate privacy information that applies to the activity.

Membership is currently free. We may introduce fees for particular services or activities, but we will not charge you for a service unless the applicable price and terms have been made clear before you commit to it.

5. Community profiles

Approved members may be invited to create a Community profile.

You can choose the information you submit, subject to any essential fields needed to operate the membership service. You will be told which information is intended to appear publicly.

A profile may include:

  • your preferred name;
  • photograph;
  • city, nearest city or region;
  • artistic discipline or professional role;
  • biography or introduction;
  • projects, interests and collaborations;
  • website, portfolio or social media links; and
  • information about activities or opportunities connected with your work.

You are responsible for ensuring that your profile information is accurate and that you have permission to provide any material relating to any third party.

We may make reasonable editorial changes to improve:

  • spelling and grammar;
  • clarity and length;
  • formatting and accessibility;
  • consistency with the Hub’s editorial style; or
  • categorisation and searchability.

We will not intentionally change the meaning of your profile without consulting you.

You may ask us to update, hide or remove your profile by contacting hello@hkartsnetuk.com.

Removal from the public website may not immediately remove copies held in backups, administrative records or legitimate archives. More information is available in our Privacy Notice.

6. Submitting content

Members and other approved contributors may be able to submit:

  • activities and events;
  • opportunities;
  • offers or requests for support;
  • collaboration notices;
  • community tips;
  • stories, interviews or reflections;
  • comments and replies;
  • photographs, recordings or artwork;
  • links and resources; and
  • other material relevant to the Hub (collectively “Content”).

When you submit any Content, you confirm that:

  • the information is accurate to the best of your knowledge;
  • opinions are genuinely held;
  • you are entitled to submit the material;
  • you have obtained any necessary permissions;
  • the material does not infringe copyright, privacy, confidentiality or other rights;
  • the material complies with the law; and
  • the material follows our Community Guidelines.

Please tell us clearly if information is provisional, uncertain or based on personal experience rather than independently verified fact.

You agree to indemnify and to keep Hong Kong Arts UK CIC fully and effectively indemnified against any action, liability, cost, claim, loss, damage, proceeding, expense (including reasonable legal expenses) suffered or incurred by Hong Kong Arts UK CIC arising from any:

(a) breach or non-observance of any term of these Terms;
(b) breach or inaccuracy in any of your above confirmation;
(c) claim by any third party that the Hub’s use of your Content under these Terms infringes any intellectual property rights or would constitute violation of any third party’s right including an invasion of privacy or any similar right or other criminal or tortious act, or that any part of your Content is obscene, indecent, violent or defamatory; and
(d) violation or contravention by you of the applicable laws, regulations, codes, guidelines applicable to the Hub.

Submitting Content does not guarantee that it will be published. We have no obligation to publish, maintain or continue displaying submitted Content and may remove or decline to publish it in accordance with these Terms.

7. How we review and edit submissions

Hong Kong Arts Net UK is a curated community platform rather than an unrestricted noticeboard nor a social media platform.

We may review submissions before or after publication. We may:

  • correct spelling, grammar and formatting;
  • shorten or restructure material for clarity;
  • add headings, categories, credits or accessibility information;
  • ask you to provide evidence, permissions or further details;
  • delay publication while information is checked;
  • decide where and how Content appears;
  • decline Content that is outside the Hub’s purpose;
  • hide, archive or remove information that is no longer current; or
  • remove material that breaches these Terms or our Community Guidelines.

Where a change is substantial or may alter the meaning of original creative or personal material, we will normally seek your agreement before publishing it.

We may act without prior notice where reasonably necessary to address:

  • unlawful content;
  • safeguarding or security concerns;
  • threats, harassment or serious abuse;
  • infringement of another person’s rights;
  • significant misinformation;
  • confidential or private information;
  • a credible complaint; or
  • an urgent risk to the organisation or community.

8. Community standards

Everyone using the Hub must follow our Community Guidelines.

Hong Kong Arts Net UK is a curated, values/rules-based arts and cultural platform. We welcome thoughtful discussion, critical debate and artistic work that engages with difficult or contested subjects.

However, you must not submit, publish or use the Hub to promote material that:

  • is unlawful, fraudulent or deliberately misleading;
  • threatens, harasses, bullies, intimidates or deliberately targets another person or group of persons;
  • promotes hatred, discrimination, violence or oppression against another person or group of persons;
  • promotes suicide or self-harm;
  • promotes, glorifies or encourages political persecution, arbitrary detention, state violence, censorship or the suppression of fundamental rights and freedoms;
  • encourages the silencing, exclusion or dehumanisation of another person or group of persons;
  • promotes, celebrates or encourages retaliation against people because of their political beliefs, identity, background, artistic work or peaceful civic activity;
  • seeks, shares or encourages the collection of personal information for the purpose of identifying, locating, monitoring, reporting, intimidating or targeting another person or group of persons without a lawful and legitimate reason;
  • facilitates surveillance, coercion, intimidation, retaliation, political persecution or other harmful action against another person or group of persons by a state, organisation, group or individual;
  • contains allegations that the contributor knows, or should reasonably know, are false or seriously misleading, or that are without adequate evidence, context or responsible sourcing;
  • contains false or seriously misleading allegations about an identifiable person, particularly where they are likely to cause serious harm to that person’s reputation;
  • infringes copyright, privacy, confidentiality or another person’s legal rights;
  • reveals another person’s private or sensitive information without appropriate permission or lawful justification;
  • impersonates another person or misrepresents an identity, role, organisation or affiliation;
  • exploits, sexualises or endangers a child, young person or adult at risk;
  • promotes terrorism, serious criminal activity or assistance to unlawful violence;
  • contains malicious software, spam or unauthorised advertising;
  • facilitates distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack;
  • uses automated tools, bulk manual processes or other means to scrape, harvest, aggregate, reproduce or extract member-profile information or other substantial amounts of Hub data without our prior written permission;
  • uses, copies or reproduces member-profile information or other Hub data for the purpose of informing, training, developing (or as input to) artificial intelligence or machine intelligence technology or services; or
  • otherwise seriously undermines the purpose, safety, trust or constructive character of the Hub. (collectively “Prohibited Material”)

Artistic, cultural and political expression

Hong Kong Arts Net UK is not a party-political platform, but arts and cultural work may engage with:

  • identity;
  • civic life;
  • democracy;
  • human rights;
  • migration;
  • displacement;
  • censorship;
  • authoritarianism;
  • political experience; and
  • other social or political questions.

We will not reject material simply because it addresses a sensitive, controversial or political subject.

The depiction or critical exploration of oppression, authoritarianism, violence, imprisonment, censorship or political persecution will not by itself breach these standards.

We will consider the work’s:

  • artistic or cultural purpose;
  • context;
  • presentation;
  • intended meaning;
  • relationship to the Hub’s purpose; and
  • likely effect on individuals and communities.

This includes considering whether the work critically examines, documents, satirises or challenges harmful conduct, or whether it actively endorses, celebrates or encourages it.

A play, artwork, film, article or other creative work may portray an oppressive character, government or argument without necessarily supporting that position. However, we may decline Content whose purpose or likely effect falls within any of the Prohibited Material’s purpose or effect.

Additional editorial review

We may decline, delay, edit, restrict or remove Content where we reasonably believe that it may:

  • expose a person or group of persons to harassment, surveillance, intimidation, retaliation or physical, legal or political harm;
  • disclose private or sensitive information;
  • facilitate unlawful or seriously harmful conduct;
  • encourage political persecution or the suppression of fundamental rights;
  • present allegations that the contributor knows, or should reasonably know, are false or seriously misleading, or that are without adequate evidence, context or responsible sourcing;
  • present false or seriously misleading allegations about an identifiable person; or
  • create a significant legal, safeguarding, security or community-safety risk.

Artistic expression, personal experience and opinion should be presented honestly and with suitable context.

Opinion, interpretation and personal testimony must not be presented as independently verified fact where that is not the case.

9. Copyright and ownership

Your Content

You continue to own the copyright and other rights in the Content that you submit.

By asking us to publish your Content, you give Hong Kong Arts UK CIC a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual and sub-licensable license to:

  • store and review it;
  • edit it as described in these Terms;
  • publish and display it through Hong Kong Arts Net UK;
  • reproduce it in formats needed for accessibility;
  • share it through our newsletters and social media;
  • use reasonable extracts or images to promote the relevant profile, activity, opportunity, story or Hub service; and
  • retain a reasonable archival copy of material that has been published.

This license applies only for purposes connected with Hong Kong Arts Net UK and the work of Hong Kong Arts UK CIC.

It does not transfer ownership of your Content to us.

Unless separately agreed, we will not sell, license commercially or substantially alter your Content for an unrelated purpose.

You may withdraw this license for future use of your Content by contacting us. We will take reasonable steps to stop future use, although we may not be able to recall material already lawfully printed, shared or published by another person.

Specific commissions, recordings, exhibitions or projects may require a separate written agreement.

We will respect applicable moral rights and will identify the creator where reasonably practicable.

When sharing your Content through our newsletters and social media, we may sublicense them to:

  • website hosting providers;
  • social-media platforms;
  • email/newsletter providers; and/or
  • accessibility/technical providers.

Our content

Unless otherwise stated, all rights in and to the design, text, branding, databases and original organisational content on the Hub vest in Hong Kong Arts UK CIC or are used with permission.

You may:

  • view and share links to public pages;
  • quote short extracts with suitable acknowledgement; and
  • print or download information for personal, educational or non-commercial use.

You must not reproduce substantial parts of the Hub, reuse our branding, create a competing database from our content or use material commercially without permission from the relevant rights holder.

Professional and commercial networking is permitted where consistent with the Hub’s purpose, but systematic harvesting, unsolicited marketing and commercial exploitation of member information are prohibited.

Credits and copyright notices must not be removed.

10. Photographs, recordings and personal stories

You must have appropriate permission before submitting:

  • a recognisable photograph or recording of another person;
  • a personal story about another person;
  • private correspondence;
  • confidential information;
  • substantial quotations; or
  • artwork or promotional material owned by someone else.

Additional consent may be required for children, young people or adults at risk.

Where we organise an event at which photography or recording may take place, we will aim to provide advance information and a reasonable way for participants to raise concerns or opt out where practical.

The exact arrangements may vary depending on the nature of the event.

11. Activities, opportunities and information from others

The Hub may publish activities, opportunities, advice, links and information provided by community members, partners or other organisations.

We take reasonable steps to review information, but we cannot guarantee that every listing or submission is:

  • complete;
  • continuously accurate;
  • still available;
  • suitable for every person; or
  • free from error.

Publication on the Hub does not necessarily mean that Hong Kong Arts Net UK:

  • organises the activity;
  • employs or represents the contributor;
  • recommends a provider;
  • endorses every opinion expressed;
  • guarantees an opportunity or outcome; or
  • has independently checked every claim.

Profiles are provided by members and may not be independently verified. You should make your own enquiries before relying on a member’s qualifications, experience, identity, professional status or representations.

Please check important information directly with the relevant organiser or provider before making a decision, booking travel, entering an agreement or spending money.

Professional, legal, financial, medical, immigration or funding information published through the Hub is general information. It is not a substitute for advice relating to your individual circumstances.

Connection opportunities among community members are created by the Hub on the following basis:

  • the Hub only facilitates the connection;
  • it does not endorse either party;
  • it doesn’t guarantee that either person is who they claim to be;
  • it doesn’t guarantee the proposed project;
  • members must respect the recipient’s privacy;
  • members must not spam or harass other members; and
  • personal information obtained through the platform must not be harvested for unrelated purposes.

12. Events and relationships between users

Unless an event is clearly identified as being organised by Hong Kong Arts Net UK or Hong Kong Arts UK CIC, responsibility for the event remains with the named organiser.

Where members or users contact, meet, collaborate with or enter arrangements with one another, they are responsible for:

  • deciding whether the arrangement is suitable;
  • agreeing roles, fees, expenses and ownership;
  • carrying out appropriate checks;
  • protecting their own safety and information; and
  • using a written agreement where appropriate.

Hong Kong Arts Net UK may help people discover one another, but it does not normally act as an agent, employer, guarantor or party to agreements between users. Nothing on the Hub creates a partnership, joint venture, agency, employment, fiduciary or other representative relationship between Hong Kong Arts UK CIC and a member or user merely because the Hub facilitates a connection.

Please report serious safety, misconduct or safeguarding concerns connected with the Hub to hello@hkartsnetuk.com.

13. External links and services

The Hub may link to third-party:

  • websites;
  • social media platforms;
  • booking systems;
  • funding portals;
  • video or audio services; and
  • other online resources.

These services are operated independently and have their own terms, privacy practices and security arrangements.

A link does not necessarily mean that we endorse everything on the external service. We are not responsible for the continuing availability, accuracy or operation of a third-party website.

14. Availability and security

We aim to keep the Hub working reliably, but we cannot promise that it will always be:

  • available without interruption;
  • free from technical errors;
  • compatible with every device or browser; or
  • free from all security risks.

We may temporarily restrict, suspend or change the Hub for maintenance, security, development or operational reasons.

You must not:

  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to an account, server or database;
  • introduce viruses or other harmful code;
  • interfere with the operation of the Hub;
  • use automated tools, bulk manual processes or other means to scrape, harvest, aggregate, reproduce or extract member-profile information or other substantial amounts of Hub data without our prior written permission;
  • test the Hub’s security without written authorisation;
  • use information obtained through the Hub for spam, harassment, surveillance or unauthorised marketing; or
  • use, copy or reproduce member-profile information or other Hub data for the purpose of informing, training, developing (or as input to) artificial intelligence or machine intelligence technology or services;  or use any artificial intelligence technology that enables you or any third party to create new content (including source separation) using such information or data.

Please tell us promptly if you discover a security problem.

15. Suspending accounts, removing Content and preserving records

Where we reasonably believe that these Terms or our Community Guidelines have been breached, we may take proportionate action.

This may include:

  • asking for clarification or correction;
  • editing or hiding Content;
  • issuing a warning;
  • temporarily restricting an account;
  • removing Content;
  • suspending or closing an account;
  • preserving relevant records;
  • referring a serious concern for legal, safeguarding or professional advice;
  • reporting serious matters to an appropriate authority; or
  • taking legal action where necessary.

We will consider factors such as:

  • the seriousness of the issue;
  • whether harm is continuing;
  • whether the breach was deliberate;
  • the user’s previous conduct;
  • the reliability of the information available;
  • the need to protect another person;
  • the artistic, cultural or public-interest context;
  • whether the contributor has been given a reasonable opportunity to explain; and
  • whether a less restrictive response would be sufficient.

Where appropriate and reasonably safe, we will explain the action taken and provide an opportunity to respond.

We may act immediately and without prior notice where delay could create:

  • a risk to someone’s safety;
  • a safeguarding concern;
  • harassment, intimidation or retaliation;
  • unlawful disclosure of personal information;
  • a security threat;
  • serious legal risk; or
  • significant harm to the community.

Preserving relevant records

Subject to applicable data-protection law and our Privacy Notice, we may preserve relevant submissions, account information, communications and moderation records where reasonably necessary to:

  • investigate a serious concern;
  • protect a person or group of persons;
  • obtain legal, safeguarding or other professional advice;
  • respond to a complaint or legal claim;
  • prevent continuing harm;
  • comply with a legal obligation; or
  • cooperate with an appropriate authority.

Access to preserved records will be restricted appropriately and the information will be handled in accordance with our Privacy Notice.

Preserving a record does not mean that we have concluded that a criminal offence or other wrongdoing has occurred.

16. Reporting a concern or challenging a decision

You can contact us to:

  • report Content;
  • raise a copyright, privacy or confidentiality concern;
  • report abuse, harassment or misuse;
  • report suspected surveillance, intimidation or targeting;
  • request a correction;
  • ask why Content or an account was restricted; or
  • raise a complaint about a moderation decision.

Please email hello@hkartsnetuk.com with:

  • a link or clear description of the material or behaviour;
  • the reason for your concern;
  • any relevant evidence;
  • whether you believe there is an immediate safety risk; and
  • your contact details.

Urgent and serious concerns

Concerns involving any of the following should be reported promptly:

  • threats or intimidation;
  • surveillance or monitoring;
  • collection or disclosure of personal information;
  • attempts to identify or locate a person;
  • political retaliation or persecution;
  • safeguarding;
  • unlawful activity; or
  • an immediate risk to someone’s safety.

We may escalate serious concerns to:

  • the Chief Executive;
  • a safeguarding lead;
  • a legal adviser;
  • an appropriate professional adviser; or
  • an appropriate authority where reasonably necessary.

We will not make criminal or legal findings ourselves. Where appropriate, we will preserve relevant information and seek advice.

Reviewing decisions

If your Content has been declined, edited, restricted or removed, or your account has been restricted, you may ask us to review the decision.

Please explain:

  • which decision you are challenging;
  • why you believe it should be reconsidered;
  • whether any information was misunderstood;
  • whether relevant context was not considered; and
  • what outcome you are requesting.

We will aim to review the matter fairly and proportionately.

Where practical, a review should be considered by someone who was not solely responsible for the original decision.

A request for review does not guarantee that the original decision will be changed, nor necessarily suspend an urgent safety/moderation decision.

We may not be able to share every detail of our decision, particularly where this would reveal:

  • another person’s private information;
  • safeguarding information;
  • confidential legal advice;
  • security arrangements; or
  • information that could place someone at risk.

17. Our responsibility

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits responsibility where doing so would be unlawful, including responsibility for:

  • death or personal injury caused by negligence;
  • fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or
  • any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Subject to this, we are not responsible for loss or damage arising solely from:

  • information supplied by another user or external organisation;
  • an external website or service;
  • an arrangement made independently between users;
  • temporary website unavailability outside our reasonable control;
  • a user failing to protect their login details; or
  • reliance on general information where appropriate professional advice should reasonably have been obtained.

We do not seek to exclude responsibility for loss that is a foreseeable result of our failure to use reasonable care and skill or our breach of a legal duty owed to you.

We will not be liable for any incidental, indirect or consequential loss or damage, damage for loss of use, data, profits or business opportunities or failure to achieve cost savings, in contract, tort or otherwise, arising out of or in connection with these Terms, even if we have been advised in advance of the possibility of such losses, costs or damages, except where the law does not permit that responsibility to be excluded.

This section is subject to applicable law, including any mandatory consumer protections and rules governing the fairness of terms. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability to the extent that the law does not permit such exclusion or limitation.

18. Changes to the Hub and these Terms

The Hub will continue to develop. We may introduce, remove or change features, membership processes and submission routes.

We may also update these Terms when:

  • the Hub or its services change;
  • our organisational arrangements change;
  • a legal or regulatory requirement changes; or
  • experience shows that clarification is needed.

The current version will be published on the Hub with its latest update date.

Where a significant change materially affects existing members, we will take reasonable steps to bring it to their attention.

Continued use of the Hub after a change takes effect will normally mean that you accept the updated Terms. We will seek fresh agreement where required by law or where the change is particularly significant.

19. Ending your use of the Hub

You may stop using the Hub at any time.

You may ask us to close your account or remove your Community profile by contacting hello@hkartsnetuk.com.

Closing an account does not necessarily require us to delete:

  • records needed to handle a complaint or legal matter;
  • evidence of consent or permissions;
  • safeguarding or security records;
  • moderation records relating to a serious concern;
  • anonymised evaluation information; or
  • a limited archival record of Content previously published.

Our Privacy Notice explains how we handle personal information after an account is closed.

20. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. Subject to any mandatory rights you may have under applicable law, the courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes arising out of or in connection with these Terms.

If you are using the Hub as an individual consumer and live elsewhere in the UK, you may also have rights under the law that applies where you live and may be entitled to bring proceedings in your local courts.

Nothing in these Terms removes rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Hong Kong Arts Net UK

Last updated: 8 Oct 2026

(If you need this document in an accessible format, please contact us.)

A welcoming and supportive community

Hong Kong Arts Net UK, an online platform in the form of a website (“Hub”), brings together Hong Kong artists, cultural practitioners, organisations and audiences across the UK.

We want the Hub to be a place where people can meet, share, exchange ideas and grow together.

These Community Guidelines explain the spirit and standards we ask everyone to follow.

They should be read alongside our:

  • Terms of Use, which explain the legal conditions for using the Hub and how content you submit (“Content”) and accounts may be managed; and
  • Privacy Notice, which explains how we collect, use and protect personal information.

These Guidelines explain the community standards we aim to apply in practice. They do not replace or limit the Terms of Use. If there is any inconsistency, the Terms of Use govern the contractual relationship between you and Hong Kong Arts UK CIC.

1. Treat people with respect

We welcome people from different:

  • artistic disciplines;
  • career stages;
  • generations;
  • identities;
  • backgrounds;
  • locations;
  • languages;
  • abilities;
  • migration experiences; and
  • political or personal perspectives.

Constructive disagreement, criticism and difficult discussion are welcome.

Bullying, harassment, threats, discrimination, intimidation and personal abuse are not.

For moderation purposes, conduct may also be assessed against the more detailed prohibited-conduct provisions in our Terms of Use.

Do not promote hatred, violence, oppression, political persecution or the dehumanisation or silencing of any individual or community.

Please refer to the Terms of Use for more details on acceptable and prohibited behaviours.

2. Share honestly and responsibly

Please make a reasonable effort to ensure that what you share is accurate.

Make clear whether something is:

  • independently verified information;
  • your own opinion;
  • personal experience;
  • artistic interpretation; or
  • information that is still awaiting confirmation.

Do not knowingly share false or seriously misleading information, or make allegations about an identifiable person or group of persons that you know to be false or that you cannot reasonably support.

Serious allegations about another person or organisation should be supported by appropriate evidence and context.

You are not expected to prove every opinion or personal experience, but you should not present opinion, speculation or unverified allegations as established fact.

3. Respect privacy and personal safety

Do not share another person’s private or sensitive information without appropriate permission or lawful reason.

This includes:

  • private contact details;
  • home addresses;
  • financial information;
  • confidential correspondence;
  • personal stories;
  • photographs or recordings; and
  • information that could be used to identify, locate, monitor or target someone.

Take particular care where Content involves children, adults at risk, health, trauma, migration history, political experience or personal safety.

More information about personal information and public profiles is available in our Privacy Notice.

Information being publicly available elsewhere does not necessarily mean that it is appropriate to repost, aggregate or amplify it on the Hub.

4. Respect creative work

Only share material that:

  • you created;
  • you have permission to use; or
  • you are legally entitled to share.

Please credit artists, photographers, writers, designers, performers and organisations accurately.

Material being publicly visible online does not mean that it is free to copy or reuse.

Where permission is required, obtain it before uploading rather than assuming that credit alone is sufficient.

Further information about copyright and the permission you give us when submitting material is available in our Terms of Use.

5. Respect other members’ boundaries

When contacting another member:

  • use contact information only for genuine community, professional or collaborative purposes;
  • do not send repeated unwanted messages;
  • respect a request to stop contacting someone;
  • do not pressure someone to participate in a project, event or collaboration;
  • do not impersonate another person or organisation; and
  • do not use member information for bulk marketing, recruitment databases or unrelated commercial solicitation.

6. Keep contributions relevant and useful

Content should have a reasonable connection with Hong Kong Arts Net UK and be useful to the community.

This may include:

  • Community profiles;
  • activities and events;
  • opportunities;
  • collaboration notices;
  • resources and practical knowledge;
  • community tips;
  • offers and requests; and
  • stories and reflections.

Please provide enough information for readers to understand what is being shared, who it is for, any important dates or conditions, and what they should do next.

Do not use the Hub mainly for spam, repetitive advertising, unrelated promotion, or fraudulent, deceptive or materially misleading commercial activity.

Reasonable promotion of your own artistic work, services, events or opportunities is welcome where it is relevant to the Hub and useful to the community.

Do not falsely claim to represent an organisation, funder, venue, agency, artist or other person. If you are posting on behalf of an organisation, make that clear.

7. Support constructive exchange

When sharing advice, feedback or experience:

  • be thoughtful and practical;
  • explain the basis of your view;
  • acknowledge uncertainty;
  • distinguish personal experience from professional advice;
  • avoid speaking as though you represent the whole community; and

8. Artistic, cultural and political expression

Hong Kong Arts Net UK is not a party-political platform, but arts and cultural work may engage with identity, democracy, human rights, migration, displacement, censorship, authoritarianism, political experience and other social questions.

We will not reject work simply because it is sensitive, controversial or political.

The depiction or critical exploration of oppression, violence, imprisonment, censorship or political persecution does not by itself breach these Guidelines.

This does not prevent artistic or critical discussion, depiction or analysis of these subjects.

We will consider the work’s purpose, context, presentation and reasonably foreseeable effect in the circumstances.

However, we will not accept Content that promotes, glorifies or encourages:

  • hatred, discrimination or violence;
  • political persecution;
  • arbitrary detention;
  • state violence;
  • censorship;
  • retaliation against peaceful civic activity;
  • surveillance or intimidation; or
  • the suppression of fundamental rights and freedoms.

We may ask for further information, context or changes before deciding whether material is suitable for the Hub.

Do not falsely claim to represent an organisation, funder, venue, agency, artist or other person. If you are posting on behalf of an organisation, make that clear.

Please refer to the Terms of Use for details on unacceptable Content.

9. How we moderate the Hub

Hong Kong Arts Net UK is a curated, values/rules-based community platform.

We may review Content before or after publication and may ask for clarification, evidence, credits or permission.

We may edit, delay, decline, hide or remove Content where it:

  • falls outside the purpose of the Hub;
  • breaches these Guidelines or our Terms of Use;
  • places someone at risk;
  • infringes another person’s rights;
  • contains serious unsupported allegations; or
  • creates a significant legal, safeguarding or community-safety concern.

More detailed information about moderation, account restrictions, complaints and reviews is available in our Terms of Use.

Where reasonably practicable, we will seek to take a proportionate response having regard to the nature and seriousness of the concern.

10. Reporting a concern

Please contact us if you see Content or behaviour that may breach these Guidelines.

Email: hello@hkartsnetuk.com

Please include:

  • a link or clear description;
  • the reason for your concern;
  • any relevant information or evidence; and
  • whether you believe someone may be at immediate risk.

If you believe someone is in immediate danger, do not rely solely on a report to us; contact the appropriate emergency or safeguarding service.

We will consider concerns seriously and handle them as sensitively and fairly as possible. We will handle reports confidentially where reasonably practicable, but may need to disclose relevant information where necessary to investigate a concern, protect someone from harm, comply with law or protect our legal rights.

1. Purpose

Hong Kong Arts Net UK is a professional and community network for Hong Kong connected artists, creative professionals, cultural practitioners and organisations based in or connected with the UK.

These Guidelines are intended to help applicants understand the types of connection, practice and professional involvement that are generally relevant to the network.

They are guidance rather than a complete or fixed definition of Hong Kong connection, arts or cultural practice. Creative work and cultural communities change over time, and many practitioners work across disciplines, sectors and professional roles.

The examples below are therefore illustrative and not exhaustive.

2. What we mean by Hong Kong connected

For the purpose of Hong Kong Arts Net UK, Hong Kong connected means having a substantial and enduring personal, cultural, creative or community connection with Hong Kong.

This is not determined by ethnicity, nationality, citizenship, passport, language or immigration status.

Relevant connections may include, for example:

  • growing up or spending significant formative years in Hong Kong and having an ongoing connection with its cultural or community life;
  • longstanding family, heritage or community connections with Hong Kong;
  • having developed a substantial part of an artistic, creative or cultural practice in Hong Kong, together with an ongoing connection to Hong Kong arts or cultural life; or
  • being part of the Hong Kong diaspora while maintaining a meaningful connection with Hong Kong culture, communities or creative practice.

Temporary residence, study, employment, business activity or professional contact with Hong Kong will not normally, by itself, be sufficient to establish a Hong Kong connection.

A person’s own identification with Hong Kong may be relevant, but self identification alone does not automatically establish eligibility.

Organisations may be considered Hong Kong connected where their purpose, programme, community or substantial body of work has an ongoing and meaningful connection with Hong Kong arts, culture or creative practice.

These examples are illustrative rather than exhaustive. We will consider the nature, depth and continuing relevance of the connection in the context of the purpose of Hong Kong Arts Net UK.

3. Who we mean by an arts or cultural practitioner

For the purpose of Hong Kong Arts Net UK, an arts or cultural practitioner may include someone whose work or practice contributes to the:

  • creation or performance of artistic work;
  • production or presentation of arts and cultural activity;
  • design, technical or craft development of creative work;
  • writing, interpretation, documentation or criticism of arts and culture;
  • curation, programming or commissioning of creative work;
  • facilitation of community or participatory arts;
  • management or development of arts and cultural organisations or programmes; or
  • development of new, interdisciplinary or emerging forms of creative practice.

Practitioners may be freelance, employed, self employed, independent or working through an organisation.

They may be established, developing their professional practice or working across more than one discipline.

We recognise that not every legitimate creative or cultural role will fit neatly into a conventional category.

Where an organisation applies, we will consider its arts, cultural or creative work, programmes, activities or role in supporting the sector.

4. Areas of practice

Examples of relevant areas of practice include, but are not limited to:

Arts and performance

Visual arts, fine art, installation, sculpture, photography, craft, ceramics, textiles, interdisciplinary practice, participatory and community arts.

Dance, choreography, physical performance and culturally specific or traditional dance forms.

Music, composition, songwriting, performance, conducting, music production and other forms of musical practice.

Theatre and live performance, including acting, directing, playwriting, dramaturgy, stage management, lighting, sound, set and costume design.

Literature, poetry, fiction, illustration, graphic storytelling and literary translation.

Film, television and moving image

Film, television, animation, moving image and related screen practice, including acting, directing, writing, producing, cinematography, editing, production design, costume, makeup, sound and visual effects.

Digital, interactive and interdisciplinary practice

Digital art, creative technology, interactive work, games and other practices in which artistic, cultural and technological work overlap.

Arts writing, criticism and cultural interpretation

Arts journalism, criticism, cultural writing, reviewing, essays, research, exhibition texts, catalogue writing and other work that interprets, documents or contextualises arts and culture.

Curation, production and cultural leadership

Curators, artistic directors, programmers, producers, commissioning professionals and people responsible for developing or presenting arts and cultural programmes.

Arts management and cultural infrastructure

Arts managers, administrators, development professionals and others whose professional work supports arts organisations, cultural institutions, festivals, venues, funding bodies, networks or community arts activity.

5. Interdisciplinary and evolving practice

We recognise that contemporary creative practice frequently crosses conventional boundaries.

An applicant does not need to identify with a single discipline.

We may consider practices, roles and forms of cultural work that are not specifically listed in these Guidelines where they are reasonably connected with the purpose and activities of Hong Kong Arts Net UK.

Commercial work is not automatically excluded where there is a meaningful artistic, creative or cultural dimension to the applicant’s practice.

Equally, being employed in a broadly creative industry does not automatically establish eligibility where the applicant’s work has little meaningful connection with arts or cultural practice.

6. Demonstrating your practice and connection

We may ask applicants for enough information to understand their professional or creative practice and their connection with Hong Kong Arts Net UK.

Depending on the circumstances, this might include a biography, CV, portfolio, website, professional profile, project information, credits, commissions, employment, publications, performances, exhibitions or other relevant information.

Where an applicant’s Hong Kong connection is not immediately clear, we may ask for further information about the nature and development of that connection.

No single type of evidence is required in every case.

We may ask for further information where an applicant’s practice, professional involvement or connection with the network is not sufficiently clear.

7. Membership decisions

These Guidelines are intended to support membership decisions, but they do not create an automatic entitlement to membership.

Meeting one or more of the examples in these Guidelines does not guarantee membership. Equally, a practice, role or type of Hong Kong connection not specifically listed here is not automatically ineligible.

We will consider applications in the context of:

  • the nature of the applicant’s Hong Kong connection;
  • the nature of the applicant’s artistic, creative or cultural practice;
  • the reasonable connection between the applicant and the purpose of Hong Kong Arts Net UK;
  • the information provided in the application; and
  • the need to maintain a relevant, constructive, safe and trusted professional community.

For membership purposes, Hong Kong Arts UK CIC will determine whether an applicant has a sufficient Hong Kong connection, having regard to these Guidelines and the information provided.

This determination is made only for the purpose of membership of Hong Kong Arts Net UK. It is not intended to define or question a person’s identity.

Hong Kong Arts UK CIC retains discretion to approve or decline an application, acting reasonably and in accordance with the purpose of the Hub and its Terms of Use.

We may also decline, restrict or end membership where we reasonably consider this necessary to protect the privacy, safety, security or trust of the community, in accordance with our Terms of Use and Community Guidelines.

Where reasonably possible, we will explain a membership decision. We may limit the information provided where this is necessary to protect privacy, confidentiality, safeguarding or security.

8. What these Guidelines do not mean

Membership of Hong Kong Arts Net UK is not a professional accreditation, qualification or endorsement of an individual’s artistic quality or professional standing.

These Guidelines are designed specifically for Hong Kong Arts Net UK and are not intended to reproduce the criteria of any external funding, immigration or professional accreditation scheme.

References to professional practice and Hong Kong connection are used only for the purpose of determining the relevance of an application to Hong Kong Arts Net UK.

9. Keeping the Guidelines current

Arts, cultural practice and communities continue to evolve.

We may therefore update these Guidelines from time to time to reflect new disciplines, forms of practice, community needs and the development of Hong Kong Arts Net UK.
